Fairy Meadows is at 3,300 meters on the northern side of Nanga Parbat in the Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan. The place offers basic facilities of huts and camping. There are no conventional hotels, and apart from the fireplaces in the huts, the only source of energy is what you carry up. There are no restaurants. The hut owners cook for their clients. Understanding the amenities available at Fairy Meadows improves your stay experience.
Fairy Meadows has a few clusters of huts, operated by different families. Each cluster has a dining area and outdoor facilities. The huts have wooden walls and floors, and have a few beds with blankets. Some huts have attached facilities while others have shared facilities. The huts do not have any source of energy. The views of the mountains from Fairy Meadows and the surrounding area, the relative seclusion, and the peace are the best features of your stay and are not related to the condition of the huts.
Camping at Fairy Meadows is a better option than staying at the huts. A good camping site offers a better experience than the huts. Also, camping gives you the opportunity to see the night sky.
A) Huts are small businesses
The huts at Fairy Meadows are built in small business clusters. The clusters contain 8 or less small hotels and a communal dining facility. Each hotel has a simple design. They are constructed of logs and frame quite similar to designs used many decades ago. While they can retain some warmth and are water-resistant, they offer no insulation.
Because of the experience required to run a successful hut business, and the nature of the equipment used, most hut clusters remain in the same family for a number of years. Hikers rely on hut staff for recent information on trail conditions, sightings of dangerous wildlife, and the weather. Hikers should keep in mind that the cost of a bed includes these services.
B) Conditions
Beds have thin mattresses and frame or no headboard. Blankets are provided. Hut walls are thin, so travelers should not expect complete privacy. Windows are very small. Ceilings are unfinished. There are no private bath facilities or showers.
Due to the high altitude of Fairy Meadows, nighttime temperatures are very cold and the thin air offers little to no heating. Also, the altitude causes the oxygen to be less dense, further reducing the temperature. The huts give each guest very few, if any, blankets. If staying in a hut, expect to supplement the provided blanket with your own.
You can expect a lack of private bathing facilities and hot water at most of the facilities. Showers are usually only available in the morning prior to your departure for your hike to the base camp.
C) Booking and Availability
Fairy Meadows huts have little to no online booking availability. The huts, however, do fill up during the busy (July and August) tourism season. The meadows huts are frequently fully booked during Pakistani holidays and the weekends.
You should book your hut through your local agency or guide prior to your departure for Tato. Many travelers hike the 3-4 hours to Fairy Meadows only to discover they have no place to stay, which is especially unpleasant due to the altitude.
A) Types of Camping
There are two kinds of camping available at Fairy Meadows. First, there is camping that is arranged by a local guide or agent that includes all camping equipment and meals. The second, and less common, option is for the traveler to arrange their own camping gear and food and find a camping spot on Fairy Meadows.
Arranging camping equipment and food to be hiked up to Fairy Meadows is a better and easier option for the traveler. Camping equipment and food can be brought up from the valley and cooked meals can be provided. The camping site is also more secluded and gives a better view of the area than the huts.
It is commonly known that many experienced hikers wild camp on Fairy Meadows. This is likely because there are very few restrictions on camping in the area. There are no restrictions regarding the setup of tents. However, out of goodwill towards your fellow hikers, you should camp a reasonable distance away from huts.
B) Camping equipment
Overnight temperatures on Fairy Meadows dip below 0°C, so camping gear for the meadows in the summer needs to be able to withstand these conditions. Standard mountain tents can not protect campers from condensation. A special type of camping stove is needed to compensate for the reduced performance of standard gas canisters at Fairy Meadows.
Camping equipment is typically lighter and easier to transport than bulky hiking gear. A well-equipped camping setup is more comfortable than staying in one of Fairy Meadows' huts. Camping gives hikers the added benefit of experiencing the majestic views of the night sky.
Camping on the meadow means an even earlier start to the day. The best time to head up there is before the clouds begin their daily march up the valleys. They normally roll in around 9 AM and block the view of Nanga Parbat, so camping means you can basically just stroll out of your tent to take in the view instead of hiking across the meadow from your hut.
Tato is the last place you can access by 4x4 from the Raikot Bridge. The trail from Tato to Fairy Meadows starts here. Tato has a couple of basic guest houses that give weary travelers a rest before they make the hike up to Fairy Meadows.
The guest houses here offer the basics and not much else. The food is simple and so is the rest of the facilities, which are outside. Tato isn’t a desirable location, but it can be a good stop on your way to Fairy Meadows.
Travelers who take the long, tiring journey from Islamabad in one day to Raikot Bridge can take advantage of a stop at Tato before their long hike to Fairy Meadows.
A. Location
The Fairy Meadows huts are located on the meadow in different locations. Some have better, and more, direct views of Nanga Parbat. For camping, the location on the meadow is important. When you stay in a hut, you really don't have much choice with regard to location.
When booking a hut stay with an operator, you should inquire about the location of the hut on the meadow with regard to the views of the mountain. The location of your hut on the meadow really does matter.
B. Food
All of the hut owners provide meals to their guests or arrange meals for their guests. Generally, the meals consist of local foods like rice and daal. You should check what meals are provided as part of the stay with the hut owner. Be sure to check if the meals are provided at times that you will be available to eat.
C. Cold Weather
You should inquire with the hut owner if blankets will be provided. The answer is usually yes; however, a thin blanket will not keep you warm at 3300 meters.
You should inquire with your camping operator if a cook will be provided with the camping package. You should ask if meals will be provided on the hike to base camp.
You should bring your own sleeping bag regardless of what the huts confirm to you. A stay in the huts can be very comfortable, but a stay in the huts can also mean a stay in the open. Bring a sleeping bag rated at least -5°C to stay warm during the night.
D) Power and connectivity
There is no electricity at Fairy Meadows. Some hut staff has solar panels to provide a light in the room. Mobile network does not work on the meadows. Expect no cell network and plan your stay accordingly.
You should bring a power bank and a headlamp with you for the stay.

Accommodation at Fairy Meadows: It is essential that you confirm accommodation prior to beginning the hike from Tato. The meadows are difficult to reach and once you are there, it is impossible to organize your accommodation. You should contact your operator to confirm prior to leaving the Raikot Bridge jeep stand.
The latest information about permits for Nanga Parbat Base Camp. Permit requirements and procedures for your nationality and planned route should be checked with your operator.

Travelling to Fairy Meadows in July or August without booking accommodation in advance. These are the months with the highest number of visitors and the meadow has a limited number of huts. Booking accommodation in advance prevents the need to find accommodation after a long and arduous hike at a high altitude.
Not bringing a suitable sleeping bag and taking for granted that the hut operator will give you a blanket.
Doing consecutive hikes from Tato to Fairy Meadows and the base camp day hike. Fairy Meadows is at 3300 meters and is the base for hiking up to many other higher peaks. Most travelers do not acclimatize once they get to Fairy Meadows and suffer from altitude sickness. It is best practice to acclimatize on Fairy Meadows before hiking up to base camp.
Hiking from Tato with all your gear. The trail from Tato to Fairy Meadows has steep inclines and gain a lot of elevation. If you are hiking with an operator, they will have a porter take your gear for you.
A. Are there any decent hotels at Fairy Meadows?
There are no conventional hotels at Fairy Meadows. The only places to stay there are simple huts. Camping there is also an option.

If you are looking for a place to stay with a camping arrangement, the operator will also provide you with a sleeping bag and a camping cook. If you stay in the huts, understand that the housekeeping and the overall standard will be poor.

Night time temperatures at 3,300 meters can drop to below zero, even in July and August. Blankets provided by hut operators are of little help and a sleeping bag rated for -5°C or lower is needed to be comfortable.

Accommodations at Fairy Meadows are difficult to make booking arrangements for online. The most reliable method is to make arrangements through a local operator or guide. However, make sure you get a confirmation for your arrangements before starting your hike from Tato.

It takes about 6 hours to complete the hike to the base camp from Fairy Meadows. Staying for two nights gives you the opportunity to hike to the base camp and take some side trips to the surrounding areas. Staying for three nights gives you more time to relax.

The hike from Tato is moderately challenging and should be doable by people in their teens, but people with limited mobility and very small kids will find it extremely difficult. The meadows are vast and provide no challenges to kids and families. Pack appropriately to deal with the cold. Exert judgment based on the fitness levels of the people in your group.
G) Is there cell phone connectivity at Fairy Meadows?
Cell phone connectivity at Fairy Meadows is absent. Some visitors have reported they were able to get Zong signal while at the meadows. You should not expect any connectivity. If you are planning to go to Fairy Meadows, let your relatives and/or friends know the plans and when you expect to come back.
