Kumrat Valley offers a unique lodging experience from what guests enjoy in Noran or Hunza. There are no city hotels, no chains, and no hotels with 24-hour front desks. What is available is a growing number of camps, glamping sites, and the most basic of guesthouses in the upper valley, with Thal town at the entrance offering the last amenities for travelers before the valley begins.
While this setup might discourage some travelers, for those aware of the situation, camping along the Panjkora River in the Kumrat Valley can make for a great vacation. Relaxing beside a bonfire is the perfect setting for any getaway.

Kumrat is located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Upper Dir District, and is about 370 KM from Islamabad. It takes 8 to 9 hours to drive via Swat Motorway to Chakdara, through Timergara and Dir to Thal. The last 20 to 30 KM to the upper valley is a jeep track along the Panjkora River. This Jalshaya should not be attempted.
Thal is the last town with a fuel station, ATM, and shops, so stock up before heading in, and take enough cash for the whole stay because there are no cashless facilities in the upper valley.
The valley runs about 35 KM through deodar and pine forests at an altitude of about 2,100 to 2,400 meters and is more steep and narrow as you travel deeper. The length of the Panjkora River is the main location for most of the camps, with some stretching to the side valleys and trekking routes to Jahaz Banda, Katora Lake, and the Badgoi Pass.
The camp/glamping market in Kumrat began to grow rapidly in 2018, when the valley became a hotspot for domestic tourism. Most of these camps setup for the tourist season, roughly from May to October, and take everything down when the valley is closed for the winter.
Two issues arise as a result. Firstly, the same camp may rank very differently from one year to the next, depending on new ownership or investment. A camp which was rated highly last year requires verification. Secondly, new camps open every year and some of the best camps are the newest. What was unequivocal in 2023 has already been surpassed by 2026.
The listings that appear consistently verified in 2025 and 2026 are Khanabadosh Glamps, Celine Resorts, Latitude Resorts, Mountain Lodge Resort and Valhalla Kumrat Glamping Resort. Panjkora Hotel and Resort is mentioned in many guest reviews as a good option for the valley. Each of these requires a direct call confirmation prior to travel as the operations are dependent on the season.
The most common of the verified Kumrat listings. Glamping, essentially, means a camp with a structure and proper bed, cook and a camp fire set up, as opposed to a bare camping set up. A riverside Glamping camp is a better pick than a guesthouse in Thal due to the setting in the Deodar forest and access to the Panjkora River.
Check the season dates for the camp configuration and book. Ask about the camp tent setup and the food.
Both are listed in the current 2025-26 Kumrat Accommodation lists. The use of resort names in Kumrat suggests a range of quality. Some properties describe a camp with wooden cabins as a resort, some add proper structures with private bathrooms. Confirm the category before booking.
How do you define a camp? What about a resort? Does this camp have running water and a generator for how many hours? What about the sleeping arrangements? These questions will help you understand the level of service they will provide.

The name Mountain Lodge Resort suggests something more permanent compared to a temporary camp, which is important to consider for visits in the shoulder months when the canvas glamping setups are not operational. Confirm whether the property is open year round or during the peak season only.
Valhalla Kumrat Glamping Resort has a Scandinavian theme and is offered in the Kumrat 2026 accommodations. In this case, glamping means a tent with a bed, bathroom, and a meal for the evening, with a common fireplace.
Located along the Panjkora River, this hotel is highly recommended in several TripAdvisor reviews. Any hotel with river frontage is the most preferred location, and you need to verify the river access in this case, as well as which side of the river the rooms are on.
The town of Thal is the gateway to the valley and the last sign of civilization before the rough roads begin. There are basic hotels that function as staging posts. It is an ok option if you are traveling from Islamabad and want to enter the valley the next day rather than arriving in Kumrat at night.
These are towns hotels, not valley camping sites, and are the most practical option for groups that need to cook and a electricity before the long drive. They are not the hotels that Kumrat is famous for.
This option is more for the traveler who wants the experience and not a managed camp. Independent camping on the Panjkora river is possible with equipment and a local guide. The forest is accessible, and the river is an excellent place to camp. The experience without the other 15 camping sites in August is worth it.
The practical aspects: a guide who knows the existing condition of the sites, a 4x4 driver for the track, your own tent and sleeping bags suited for the overnight temperature, and a day pack for the Jahaz Banda trek. The valley floor between 2,100 and 2,400 metres gets cold at night even during the month of July.
The normal trek from the valley is to Jahaz Banda meadow at 3,100 metres. The trek from the jeep drop off point is fourteen kilometres and takes seven to eight hours. It is a moderate to difficult trek with a lot of altitude gain, and the meadow at the end, bordered by snow-covered peaks and with a view of the Upper Dir region, is the payoff.
Katora Lake, at 4,000 metres, is six kilometers above Jahaz Banda Meadow. It is on a difficult track that needs a guide. The lake is glacial in origin and is frozen for most of the year, except during the summer. To reach Katora Lake, from the valley, takes a two to three day trek with camping at Jahaz Banda.
Any camping package that includes Jahaz Banda must confirm if a jeep to the trail head is included, if the guide is licensed, and if the camping equipment for the meadow night is included. A camp in the lower valley and Jahaz Banda as a day trek are entirely different journeys, and must be priced separately.
The visiting season runs from May to September. The month of May welcomes the blooming of flowers and the greening of the forests. From June to August, temperatures rise the most and peak visitor numbers are recorded. The valley becomes extremely crowded from July to August as domestic tourists stay at the major campsites.
The start of September slowly welcomes the autumn color of the forests and thins the crowd a little. By October, the valley begins to close and the snow returns first to the higher altitudes.
The Badgoi Pass which connects Kumrat to Kalam via Swat is a summer crossing only and, just like any other high pass, requires local knowledge as well as a guide.
Kumrat gets very cold in winter and the road to Thal becomes even more difficult. Most camps close. It is best not to enter the valley from November to April without confirmation of road and accommodation conditions.
Always check with your operator if the camp is open and running this season before finalizing your dates. Kumrat camps tend to be more unpredictable than valley hotels.
When discussing accommodation, a good place to start is by inquiring about the toilet facilities. Facilities which are shared and located outdoors as well as facilities which are enclosed and located indoors are both referred to as 'resort' in Kumrat.
Always confirm if the camp has food prepared, as going into the forest with no plan for food becomes quite the challenge when you try to exit the camp in the evenings.
Contact the camp for information on supplied sleeping equipment. Pack your own rated below 0 sleeping bag, even if told there is equipment, since the valley floor gets colder than expected at this elevation in July.
Do not take your own vehicle past Thal. The road beyond is 4x4 and even more so after rain. Either arrange locally or use the vehicle your operator gives you.
Do not attempt the Jahaz Banda trek if you do not have a guide and familiarity with the trail. The fourteen kilometers is not a trail in the usual sense.
Bring cash from Islamabad. There is an ATM in Thal which may not be working. The upper valley has nothing.
