Hunza Valley has been the most popular honeymoon destination in Pakistan since about 2022, compared to other popular honeymoon destinations such as Murree and Naran. There is no shortage of reasons as to why this valley is so attractive to couples, especially with Rakaposhi in the background standing tall at 7,788 meters, the glacier lake that can be photographed from the comfort of your room, and countless other forts that date back to the 14th century.
When you choose our honeymoon packages for Hunza, you're certainly not opting for the standard flower arrangement tour. For starters, what provides the ValleyValley with an edge over other similar destinations in northern Pakistan?
There are three things that give it an edge over other options in northern Pakistan.
The Valley does not draw one type of traveler. In September or October, Hunza has couples, photographers, hikers, families, and expeditions (at the same time); this means you do not spend your holiday in the company of other honeymooners or in a honeymoon resort, which can be self-frustrating and self-conscious.
The hotels in Karimabad do not have rooms with shared mountain views from a terrace. Viewing Rakaposhi from your bed is a completely different experience from viewing it from a rooftop.
The ValleyValley has two photogenic windows the blossom season in March and April, and the autumn color season in October that cannot be replicated by resort landscaping.
The primary concern regarding a honeymoon package is the type of room booked – is it a double or a twin? In several properties in northern Pakistan, the booking is typically a twin room unless requested otherwise, and finding out this inconvenient fact at 11 pm after a fourteen-hour drive is the worst time to learn this.
The booking confirmation should state the room type, not in a WhatsApp message. All three of the above-mentioned hotels (Hunza Serena Hotel, Luxus Hunza Attabad, and Eagle’s Nest) have couple-appropriate room types. The confirmation should state the room and the bed type.
Luxus Hunza Attabad Lake Resort. Simply put, it’s a glass-walled resort built right next to Attabad Lake in Gojal. This lake was formed in 2010 after the Hunza River was dammed by a landslide. Its beautiful turquoise color is attributed to the sedimentation of glacial silt in the melting water. If you’re a couple looking to take a picture of your room without the need to use a picture editing app, this place offers just that. They tend to book up the peak blossom and summer months, so be sure to book in advance. The September months are usually the best months to visit, and due to the increase in popularity for those months, be sure to book ahead of time for those specific times as well.
Hunza Serena Hotel, Karimabad. As the only full-service hotel in the center of Hunza, they have a reliable, eco-friendly, AKDN-certified mountain terrace view, good food, and full generator backup. While this is nothing like a boutique hotel, it fulfills its promises, and for a honeymoon, that’s really all that matters. The terrace is a great spot for sunset, and you’ll enjoy the changing colors on Rakaposhi.
Eagle's Nest Hotel, Duikar: Considered a view hotel rather than a luxury hotel, but definitely has the best sunrise views in the Valley. Rooms are basic, but the sunrises are beautiful with views of Rakaposhi, Diran, Ultar Sar, and Lady Finger, all lined up at around 3,100 meters. One couple's perfect getaway is to stay at Eagle's Nest; it's worth the drive to get there from the city, but get there early to beat the day-trip jeep tours.
Best Western Premier Karimabad: A wonderful option for a mid-range stay in the bazaar area. If you prefer to be a short walk from the forts and bazaar over staying at a resort, this is a wonderful option for couples.
A 7-night Hunza honeymoon thoroughly covers the Valley. 5 nights is doable, but 4 feels more rushed.
Day 1. A long travel day from Islamabad is followed by a mid-afternoon arrival in Karimabad. To beat the time on the road (14-18 hours), take the flight to Gilgit instead (one hour), followed by a 2-hour road transfer to Karimabad. After arriving, take some time to relax at your hotel and explore the bazaar. You have none of the day planned!
Day two.
Baltit Fort has the best sunrise views before the day trip tour groups arrive.
It was constructed sometime in the 14th century, and has remained in its current location overlooking the valley ever since.
We will visit the older and quieter Altit fort, and the Royal Garden in the afternoon.
The Baltit fort was constructed four hundred years later, and is significantly busier.
The Royal Garden, which is situated below the Baltit fort, is a terrace that has been replanted and can be appreciated either in spring or in the autumn.
The day will end in Ganish village, the oldest settlement in the Valley, with four historic mosques and lanes that have remained unchanged in their shape for many centuries.
Day three.
We will head north to Attabad Lake. We will spend the morning on the lake. A private boat is suggested to avoid the tours that are bound to the circuit. We will proceed to Gulmit, Hussaini Bridge, and Passu.
The Passu Cones, from the highway below, are best photographed in the evening, and are truly worth a stop, as they appear in every article on Hunza.
It is worth staying the night either in Gulmit or Passu to see the upper valley in the morning, as opposed to another day trip.
Day four.
A short walk from Passu is a glacier viewpoint, only thirty minutes from the highway and on a path that anyone can walk.
We will return to Karimabad.
Day five.
Go to Duikar for Sunrise above Karimabad. You may want to stay the night at Eagle's Nest to get the best views, as the hotel leaves at 4:30 am. The views for thirty minutes after sunrise are well worth the trip.
Day six. Drive to Khunjerab Pass at 4,693 meters. Allow for a full day. The pass closes to traffic every winter and reopens every spring. The last section of the road is in Khunjerab National Park. You can see marmots and feel the effects of the thin air there. Spend your day in Khunjerab and return to Karimabad in the evening.
Day seven. Visit the bazaar, the Haldeikish rock carvings, and take the flight or drive back.
Hunza Valley attracts a record for bookings and photos in Pakistan during the months of March and April. The terraces are a cascading carpet of flowers from the Apricot, Cherry, Almond, and Peach trees. The lower sections of the Valley start blooming first, with Karimabad following a week later, and finally Gojal around the middle of April.
To see the blossoms while on your honeymoon, you should aim to reach Karimabad as quickly as possible to enjoy the flowers while they are at their peak. After a couple of days, you can enjoy the northern blossoms at Gojal.
The truth of the matter is, rooms in Karimabad during peak blossom at the end of February can easily be booked almost a year in advance. January is the earliest you can aim for an April wedding. You need to view this as a minimum and not as a due date.
September is the winner in Hunza after the complications of summer. By the time September rolls around, the maddening crowds that were in place for July and August have cleared, prices drop, and clear mountain views alongside open Khunjerab and all the valley routes make for a beautiful setting.
Late October adds the golden hue of poplar and apricot tree vistas. The golden hue descends all the way to Karimabad by the end of the month. This works great for couples who want to have the whole Valley to themselves and the beautiful golden light of autumn across the mountaintops.
A few alterations in your itinerary define a honeymoon package.
For a honeymoon package, you would have your own private vehicle rather than a shared transportation package. Passengers on a package tour have commitments to group timing. You have the flexibility to take breaks and enjoy the views when the lighting is optimal.
For Hunza, packages have an advantage over self-arranged food. Meals in Hunza are easily arranged by the hotel at which we stay.
There are excellent hotels with reliable kitchens that provide whatever a couple might want, including the Serena in Karimabad and Luxus at Attabad.
Flexible daily schedules. A good honeymoon itinerary may include a main activity in the morning, but should allow for an afternoon that can be whatever the day permits: a long walk, an extra hour at the lake, a leisurely afternoon spent at the bazaar. A schedule with every hour planned leaves no room for the trip to become what it becomes.
No requests are made in advance, but most hotels in the Hunza region will upgrade a honeymoon room, decorate the room with flowers, and/or provide a cake with prior notification. It shouldn't be expected, but there is no cost to request it.
Confirm room type as double in writing before you travel. Check in as a couple and request a specific room number/ category, not a ‘couple room’.
Ask whether the hotel has been informed this is a honeymoon, and what arrangements they can make.
Ask whether the tour vehicle for the lake and Khunjerab is the same private vehicle, or if it is a shared jeep. A honeymoon package should not put a couple into a shared jeep with others for the main site visits.
Confirm breakfast timings. If the Duikar sunrise is planned, verify if the kitchen can make something prior to the 4:30 am departure.
Honeymoons should be booked in January so you secure the best rooms.
Don't book a trip for the Eid summer weekend in Hunza without booking months prior. Especially in July and August, Hunza has simply become too popular, and walk-in or last-minute bookings won't work.
Don’t try to do a trip to Khunjerab as a half-day outing. It takes three to four hours to get there from Karimabad and also counts as a full-day trip.
How often is Hunza booked for honeymoons? Since around 2022, it has been booked the most for honeymoons out of all the destinations in Pakistan. The best reason for this is the combination of picturesque mountain views that can be seen from the hotels, the easy access to lakes, and even the forts, in addition to the seasonal blossom and autumn windows.
What is the best time to go on a honeymoon to Hunza? Late March and April are the best times to enjoy the seasonal blossoms. Clear skies and open roads draw the best summer crowd in September. For the best autumn views, go in Late October.
How many nights should be booked for a honeymoon in Hunza? 7 nights should be booked for an optimal honeymoon vacation. 5 nights is the working minimum, but 7 nights allows for leisure, lake and fort visits, and even checks Khunjerab and Duikar off the list without time constraints.
Would the long drive from Islamabad impact a honeymoon? It is a 14- to 18-hour drive over two days. Taking the flight to Gilgit, which is an hour from Islamabad, totally avoids the long drive. The trip is worth doing at least once to enjoy the views of the Karakoram Highway and Nanga Parbat.
Is it possible to see the blossoms from the hotel room in Karimabad? Although it is possible to see the blossoms from the terrace of the hotel, it is not possible to see them from the room; hence the need to take the walking route from Karimabad to Altit along the orchards rather than staying on the road.
Do the hotels in Hunza offer honeymoon packages? Most of the hotels in Hunza, such as Hunza Serena and Luxus Attabad, along with the better hotels in Karimabad, can arrange packages upon prior request. Ensure you inform them in advance and request the hotel to arrange it for you.
