Prior to purchasing a package, it is important to understand the differences in the lengths of tour packages and how these lengths impact your tour experience, as a 3-day trip and a 12-day trip can be two very distinct experiences.
The Hill country stations, less than a week's distance away from Islamabad, include Murree, Nathiagali and the Galiyat. You can be looking at day one of your trip, from the capital to arriving at your accommodations at your destination.
These trips are great for families with small children, office groups taking short breaks, as well as first-time vacationers considering a long tour. Pine forests, cool air, and easy to moderate walks are some of the amenities, and you will not spend the majority of your vacation driving.
Shogran and Siri Paye can be done in four days if you start early in the morning. The track to Siri Paye by jeep is really nice, with gorgeous open pastures and mountain views after you go past the tree line. Just remember the bumpy ride to the top, so make sure to check the road conditions beforehand.
A week is a good amount of time for a first time visit to the far north. In 5 to 7 days, you can visit one major valley, relax in it, and see it, instead of just seeing parts of it quickly as you drive by.
Naran and Kaghan are great choices for this amount of time. You follow the Kaghan Valley to the town of Balakot, and if the weather and time allow, you visit Lake Saif ul Malook above Naran. The Saif ul Malook lake road opens with warmer weather which typically kills the snow on the road, and closes again with the coming of winter, so timing is very important.
Hunza is a great one-week choice as well. The Karakoram Highway takes a full day or more to accomplish, and a one-week trip to Hunza gives you a few relaxed days to visit almost all the places you want. The Baltit and Altit forts, Attabad Lake, the Passu Cones, and a sunrise from Eagle's Nest are a few places. If you are so inclined, you can add a day or so to get to the Khunjerab Pass and the China border.
At eight days or more, you can start to combine valleys or explore a single region more extensively. This is when your visit to Northern Pakistan begins to have the feel of a true expedition.
The combination of Hunza and Skardu is a popular choice. This itinerary takes you along the Karakoram Highway to Hunza. Here, you take your time and explore before heading over toward Skardu to check out the resort area of Shangrila, Kachura and Satpara, as well as the starting point for Deosai. Deosai National Park is the world’s second-highest plateau and only opens for a short time each summer (around two months). Therefore, in order to reach Skardu and Deosai, you have to time it correctly.
The longer tours give you more flexibility with time. This allows for multiple stops in villages to take a long hike and spend the night out in the open under a starry sky. Photographers and other people who appreciate the slower pace and have visited before appreciate the extended itineraries the most.
The longest tours, at 14 days or more, are for the hardcore travelers, groups on trekking tours, and far-away visitors who want to fit as much as possible into their trip. These are geared towards the adventurous traveler looking to get as much done as the season and their time allows.
A grand tour brings together Naran, Hunza, Skardu, Fairy Meadows, and the Nanga Parbat base camp area. Side trips include Nagar, Ghizer, and Chitral. There are also the Kalash valleys. Fairy meadows requires resolve, as it is currently only accessible by a bumpy jeep road and a short hike or trek. The rewards are exciting, as this location offers breathtaking views of Nanga Parbat, one of the tallest mountains on the planet.
Careful sequencing is needed for long trips as the opening times of parks, roads, and climates are all different. This type of grand tour is best coordinated by one team who then can rearrange the tour due to one closed road so the tour does not become a complete failure.
Start with the end in mind, or rather your days. An itinerary that focuses on trying to get to Hunza in four days will leave you completely exhausted and not much longer outside of a car than a four-day itinerary to Hunza is ideal. Look at all of the planned stops and match the travel time to the length of your itinerary.
Long single-day drives aren’t ideal for older family members and very young children. It is better to plan a slower pace on a shorter distance journey. Groups of friends can go much farther and much faster.
Consider the season. A lot of great northern spots, including Lake Saif ul Malook, Deosai, the Khunjerab Pass, and higher passes, are only accessible during the warmer months. If your travel dates fall outside this range, a reputable tour operator will look at what is actually open and give you official recommendations of what is worth viewing.
Make sure you understand what is included in the package you choose because, more often than not, the tour operator with the lower price also has the cheapest offer.

Pakistan tour operators may have a license from the Department of Tourist Services (DTS), and some are members of the Pakistan Association of Tour Operators. Booking with a verifiable licensed operator is a safer bet than an individual organizer who books trips through social media.
Be certain that everything gets written down. A correct itinerary includes the names of hotels, the type of vehicle, inclusions and exclusions. If all you have is a quote with one price then that is not acceptable.
See what payment procedure is in place. A booking confirmation and payment structure where they ask for a lower deposit is great. Booking a trip where the full payment is required is a red flag.
Cheap trips may have hidden costs. A bad deal in the mountains can include low quality hotels, an overcrowded and hot vehicle, and a bad route that can cause many issues. You usually figure this out at the worst possible time.

How many days do I need for Northern Pakistan?
For destinations like Murree and the nearby Galiyat, three to four days is good enough. For Naran or Hunza, plan for five to seven days. For a combination of Hunza and Skardu or longer tours, eight days or more is required.
What are the optimum travel dates?
The longer days of spring and summer will allow for more of the passes and lakes to be uncovered. In the spring, the blossoms in Hunza Valleys will be especially picturesque, and in the fall, the sky will be clear and filled with vibrant colors. It will also be quieter during the winter season as some passes will be closed due to heavy snow.
